BoneLight in Excel
The trace file can now be converted into an Excel sheet for your review. No more considering about csv, BoneLight convert the trace file into through-and-through Excel 2007 or excel 2003 workbook with PivotTable and PivotGraph enabled. ( Excel 2007 is highly preferred comparing to Excel 2003.)
Let’s see a sample result generated.
We call the Excel conversion result as ExcelView of a trace file. So in the front page, the summary shows some basic information about the trace such as original trace file version or original trace file format. A total number of packet count and graph/protocol count are display as an icon description below.

Now we can have packets list in excel which shows many column of a packet, such as source, destination address, timestamp and IPID , TTL information, the Protocol type and a decode summary. The protocol and decode summary column are rendered by the color of the protocol. It is not only a list for looking, all column has filter enabled, so you can easily filter out a specific IP or a specific protocol by click the small arrow button at the header row.

We know packet list is not enough for you, so we add graphs. The graphs were generated from the captured packets directly and using PivotTable technology to make it appear with interactive. Be noticed there is no any Excel-Macro used in the full workbook, hence, there is no security threat by using these generated result.

Currently, around 10 graphs are implemented, new graphs are coming and you can use Excel skill to create new graphs by yourself just in a minute.
For the next step, we know just graphs and packet list are not enough for you, so we created Protocol Tree. The protocol tree use a nested tree model to list all protocol/application traffic found in the trace. As in the figure, you can see the HTTP application take 36% of total traffic and it is base on TCP/IP protocol suite over Ethernet. With the protocol sheet, you can understand the traffic from top to bottom.

After we created the protocol lists, we know more things we need to prepare for you. Which host talk the most in the traffic, what’s those traffic? We can check the host list and sort it with 2 mouse click by excel sorting feature. Then we find who talks the most.

More than see who, there is a detailed PivotTable we created for you. Expand the host you feel interested and see what actually the host talks.

OK, we find the host talks many HTTP and WebProxy traffic. If you feel more interested in what actually for the HTTP, then go back to packet sheet and filter that traffic by IP. You can see a full list of actual traffic conversation. Feel like see a finance report? Yes, we try to bring the Excel power to network guys to bring a new mindset of operations and thinking.
If you get some idea on that traffic, you can then easily mark those packets, change the color, add a comment, modify the font or anything to put your idea into the sheet. So other people can see and understand much easier and think much more.
